This blog is all about the word “umm” and why it makes you look very unprofessional to say the word “umm”. Umm is a word that means you are thinking of the answer. Which is not something you want the other person to think.
When giving a speech or presenting a project it is very important not to give any hints that you don’t know what you’re doing. It will reflect badly on yourself if you give of any detail of no understanding.
“Umm” is what is known as a verbal filler, all it does is signal that you are busy thinking. “Umm” works as a silence filler to help grab listeners attention and make sure they are still focused. But it doesn’t actually work, because to the listeners “umm” is a signal for the listener to stop paying attention.
Why you shouldn’t use “umm” when speaking is because it will make you sound like you know what you’re doing and did the job right. “Umm” could also mean you are second-guessing/doubting yourself and your actions. This will signal to other that you are not very bright or aren’t able to do projects.
So overall just don’t use the word “umm” when speaking, or try to not say it by accident so that you don’t look bad or unskilled.
